God is Spirit

This meditation is based on a passage for May 23, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: John 4:19-26

Reflection and Question: From our 2010 vantage point, it is hard to appreciate how very audacious Jesus’ insights are in this conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well. His statement that salvation belongs to the Jews may be a put-down toward the Samaritans, but it is eclipsed by His assertion that God will seek those who worship in spirit and in truth because God is spirit. From this flows the logic at the heart of the gospel that there is neither Jew nor Greek nor Samaritan, neither black or white, rich or poor, gay or straight, there are only those who worship the great “I am” who is Jesus. How do you worship God in spirit and in truth?

Prayer: Spirit of the great “I am,” seek us as Jesus promised You would and find us worshiping in spirit and in truth. We grasp Jesus’ hand as He teaches us all things. We bow before You, the Triune God, Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. Amen.
